(a) The YKDB was searched by first alphabetically arranging the 17703 genes that was considered in the analysis.
The expression pattern of every hundredth gene was investigated. 
After going through the entire genome this way, there was still not 50 genes with RNA in situ expression patterns,
so I began at the top of the list looking at every hundredth gene, but starting at number 50.
The number of genes with expression patterns was miscounted, ending up with 51 (numbers 1-51).
(b) The clone in YKDB from which the expression pattern was obtained.
For technical reasons, those clones with the letter "e" are surrounded by quotation marks by us. 
Those genes that were examined, but no expression data could be found do not have a clone name.
(c) If the RNA in situ pattern was consistent with the staining of the positive controls (see S-Table 2),
then a "+" was scored for the gene.
If the gene was shown to be expressed anywhere at anytime in the animal, but not in muscle, the gene received a "-"
If a clone was examined in the YKDB, but showed no obvious expression, it was scored as "no staining"
