Eudora

The free version for the Macintosh (Eudora 1.4.3) is on cmgm MacArchives in the network folder. There is also a manual.

Eudora will work using a slip connection

Advantages

• Can be used at the office and at home over a telephone line with very little difference apparent to the user.
• Supports multiple mailboxes and nested mailboxes
• Supports a phone book, nicknames and mailing lists
• Eudora can be used via a SLIP connection
• The commercial version (about $46 with the university discount) has a few nice features like:
  • Automatic message filtering
  • Spell checker

Disadvantages

• POP mail clients download your mail to your personal computer.
• This can be an advantage or a disadvantage if you work on many machines. You can leave the mail on the server, but when you check mail, you will get only the new messages posted in your mail box (unless you choose to download, and then all new and old mail will be deleted from the sever)
• Eudora is configured for a single user, and others who use your computer will change the settings. Also you will share mailboxes! Mailstrom (easier to use, but less features) is better for an environment where several people share one computer.

Setting up Eudora

1. Configuration Option
   • POP Account: your_login_name@cmgm.stanford.edu

   • Real Name: Your Real Name Here (as you would like it to appear)

   • Connection Method
     • Choose MacTCP if you are on the network
     • Choose Connection Tools if you are dialing in from home (and refer to the communication option)
   • SMTP Server: cmgm.stanford.edu

2. Communications (Used when using the dial-up version via a mdoem)

   Choose a communication tool (like modem tool, or the one that came with your modem)

   Put in the phone number 725-9600. The 498-1440 line now requires you to use your leland account and password and as of this writing, I'm not sure if it works with Eudora.
